Somare urges Melanesian solidarity

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, January 19, 2009) – Papua New Guinea says it will give Fiji more than half a million US dollars in flood relief assistance.

The prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, says as members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group and the Pacific Island Forum, they must assist one another during each other’s difficult times.

Sir Michael says to save lives, quick action is needed and therefore he has asked for the release of the funds from the National Disaster and Emergency Services.
