TROPICAL DEPRESSION HOVERS NEAR NIUE

Winds of up to 50 kilometers an hour

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, January 27, 2009) – A tropical weather depression is looming near Niue with the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone.

The Niue Met Service says the depression was 685 kilometres west of Niue early Monday afternoon local time.

Strong winds of up 50 kilometres an hour are expected near the centre of the depression as it moves southeastwards at about 17 kilometres an hour.
