Calls for united front against Fiji’s military leader

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Jan. 28, 2009) - The Pacific Islands Forum leaders have called on the international community to support the measures they have put in place to hold Fiji accountable and encourage prompt restoration of political democracy.

On Tuesday afternoon in Port Moresby, Forum leaders decided to urge Fiji to set a date by May 1 to hold a general election this year or face technical, financial and trade sanctions.

In 2007 at the Forum meeting in Tonga, interim PM Voreqe Bainimarama promised to hold elections by March of this year.

He did not attend last year’s Forum in Niue and cancelled his trip to Port Moresby, saying the devastation left by the floods made it impossible for him to leave the country.
