Deported last year after publishing critical editorials

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Mar 16, 2009) - Deported publisher and chief executive officer of the Fiji Sun, Russell Hunter, has resigned, a little over a year after he was sent home to Australia by the interim government.

This has been confirmed by recently-appointed Fiji Sun CEO, Peter Lomas.

Lomas told Fijilive news, Hunter is no longer publisher of the Fiji Sun and Sunday Sun newspapers -- a position he continued to hold after being deported to Australia on February 28, last year.

"Mr. Hunter obviously assisted in the management transition following his sudden deportation," Lomas said.

After his deportation, Hunter remained publisher while Editor-in-Chief Samisoni Kakaivalu acted as CEO until Lomas was appointed.

Lomas said as far as he knew, Hunter was continuing his career elsewhere in the Australian news media and his vast experience and ability was much in demand.
