Fiji Labour Party leader has been away since last month

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, March 31, 2009) – Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has been on a private visit to India since last month.

A senior party member who preferred anonymity confirmed this yesterday.

"Yes, he is still in India and has not returned and he is there on a private visit," the member said.

Last Wednesday, interim Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, his wife Mary, PSC permanent secretary Parmesh Chand and a bodyguard left for India.

The visit is a follow-up to an earlier visit which Mr Bainimarama undertook in February last year to inspect facilities at the Batra Hospital in New Delhi for overseas medical treatment of military personnel.

It's been confirmed that during this visit, Mr Bainimarama will conclude discussions with the Indian Government on the purchase of a property made available to Fiji for the construction of a Chancery in New Delhi.

The trip has been funded by the Indian Government.

The group is expected to return today.

Last Friday, Military spokesman Major Neumi Leweni confirmed chief of staff Colonel Mohammed Aziz was also in India.
