Historian cannot teach for five years in French system

NOUMÉA, New Caledonia (Oceania Flash, April 7, 2009) - A professor of History at the University of New Caledonia (UNC) has been barred from teaching in any French Higher Education and University establishment for a duration of five years, after it was found he had posted on the Internet pictures of himself and a partner engaged in sexual intercourse.

The controversy erupted in March last year, when the Professor, now named as Frédéric Angleviel, was expelled from the University of New Caledonia (UNC) for the same reasons.

The professor had then lodged an appeal to the UNC Council ruling.

The sanction was reported to be the harshest in the French national education system. A first ruling came last year after members of the council heard the views and testimonies from several students and the accused academic.

Last week, the appeal was rejected and the sanction was extended to the whole of French university network, including in metropolitan France and overseas, the daily newspaper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reported at the weekend.

The controversy last year had also taken the shape of protests and demonstrations by students of the UNC, who strongly opposed being taught by the controversial academic.

The students were at the time brandishing placards bearing such slogans as "Welcome to the University of Vice" or "We're not prostitutes, we're not submissive, we're just students."

The first UNC Council ruling, last year, already meant that that the man who has locally been dubbed the "Porn Prof" and who had been with UNC for the past twenty years will no longer be able to teach either in New Caledonia or anywhere else in the French education system.

UNC council members at the time explained their decision saying it was also based on the fact that this practice of taking pornographic pictures within UNC and later posting them on the Internet had been "recurrent" in the past few years and therefore had now "severe repercussions on the credibility of the whole institution".

The pictures featuring the 48-year-old academic involved in sex acts, they said, were taken in several locations within UNC, including his own office, an open-air terrace, toilets and even a lecture room.

The academic, who is a well-known figure in New Caledonia, was initially spared the public shame of being named in the local media.

Apart from his academic responsibilities, he has also held the position of member of the capital Nouméa’s Municipal Council and is considered close to former New Caledonia ruler, Jacques Lafleur.
