Samoan found guilty of abandonment

APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, April 14, 2009) - The mother of the plane baby could be making her way to Samoa a lot quicker than we thought.

New Zealand Immigration officials are to talk with the Samtau woman who abandoned her newborn baby on a flight from Samoa about arrangements for her return home, RNZI reported yesterday.

Karolaine Maika, 29, abandoned the baby girl after she secretly gave birth on a flight to Auckland on 19 March.

She pleaded guilty in the Manukau District Court last week to a charge of abandonment, and was convicted and discharged.

The Department of Labour says discussions with Ms Maika will focus on arrangements for an early return to Samoa.

The baby, Grace, is in the care of Child, Youth & Family. She is with extended family in Auckland until long term arrangements can be made for her care.
