Rabi Island community to choose council members

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Sun, April 21, 2009) – The Banaban comunity of Rabi Islands go to the polls this week to elect their council of leaders.

Elections for the nine members of the Rabi Council of Leaders is now scheduled for Thursday and Friday. This election was supposed to be held in January 2009, but was deferred because of the floods in the Northern division.

There are altogether a total of 2971 registered voters from the four main villages (Tabwewa, Uma, Tabiang and Buakonikai) of Rabi Island as well as those Banabans living in Vanua Levu and Viti Levu.

A total of seven polling stations have been established with four on Rabi Island and three outside Rabi. The polling centres are at Tabwewa, Uma, Tabiang, Buakonikai, Suva, Lautoka and Labasa.

The Office of the Commissioner Northern is facilitating the election programme together with the assistance of Provincial Administrator Cakaudrove, District Officer Suva, District Officer Lautoka and District Officer Macuata.

A total of 28 candidates have been confirmed and they will be vying for the nine (9) member seats of the Council.
