Drugs, guns and gangs story allegedly falsified

APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, April 22, 2009) – The Government has confirmed it will sue TVNZ over a news item about guns and drugs in Samoa.

The story, carried on One News and Samoan television earlier this month, showed young men with machetes, smoking cannabis and discussing the growing gun and drug trade in Samoa.

Police are understood to have alleged that some of the people who appeared in the story were `actors’ posing as gangsters and drug dealers.

This has been strongly denied by TVNZ which is standing by its story.

Following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Attorney-General, Aumua Ming Leung Wai, told The Dominion Post the Government would instruct lawyers Chapman Tripp to proceed with legal action.

The government said the item damaged Samoa’s reputation as a safe place for tourists.
