By Gemma Q. Casas

SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, May 1, 2009) -- Finance Secretary Eloy S. Inos, the running mate of Gov. Benigno Fitial in his re-election bid this year, will appear before the Senate today for his confirmation hearing as the first unelected lt. governor of the Northern Marianas.

Senate President Pete P. Reyes, R-Saipan, is convening the Senate at 9 a.m. today to hear the public’s comments about Inos’s nomination.

"During the session, the Senate will meet in the committee of the whole to receive comments from the public and government officials regarding the appointment of Mr. Eloy Inos to lt. governor. By this notice, interested individuals are welcome to present testimony regarding Mr. Inos’s appointment, subject to the discretion of the chair," Reyes, R-Saipan, stated in a memorandum.

The confirmation hearing was originally scheduled for April 29 or two days after the governor nominated Inos as the first appointed CNMI lt. governor.

His nomination followed the resignation of former Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez who was convicted of corruption charges in federal court.

Inos, 59, holds an accounting degree from the University of Guam.

Several written public comments have already been sent to the Senate about Inos’s nomination.

Freddy U. Hofschneider Jr. of Tinian said Inos will be an asset to the Fitial administration.

"Governor Fitial made one of his best decisions for the CNMI as Mr. Inos is a very intelligent, brilliant and is a highly respected gentleman. He has made tremendous contributions to the CNMI and has displayed his motivation in working cohesively with our governor in providing the CNMI with quality leadership."

The governor, a long time friend and ally of Inos, asked the Senate for its "prompt and favorable action."
