15 people arrested in ‘ice’ ring

PAPEETE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse, May 7, 2009) – Police officers in Papeete have seized a record amount of the drug methamphetamine also known as ice.

About 350 grams (12.4 ounces) of the powerful drug were seized.

Investigations which went on for several months ended with the arrest of 15 persons.

The drug which was in liquid form was sent by mail from Mexico to Tahiti. It is the first time ever such a trafficking ring has been uncovered in French Polynesia.

The drug seized was worth $US 1 million, according to Police officers.

Last September, the Papeete Magistrates' Court sentenced the ringleader of a 10-person drug smuggling operation to eight years in prison.

The case known as the "Vahine connection" (Women connection) involved 19 people and was also about the methamphetamine drug commonly known as ice.
