Chief Justice Gates back on the bench

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, May 21, 2009) – Justice Anthony Gates has been reappointed Fiji’s Chief Justice.

Also returning to the Fiji judiciary are Justice Devendra Pathik and Justice Daniel Gounder.

They were sworn in today by President Josefa Iloilo.

Local lawyer Sosefo Inoke was the only new appointment to the High Court bench.

Iloilo also appointed Lautoka-based private legal practitioner Mary Muir as magistrate.

The country’s high courts have been out of session since April 10, when all judicial appointments were revoked and the 1997 Constitution abrogated.

More judicial appointments are expected to be made soon.
