Seeks to retain seat after call for by-elections

APIA, Samoa (Talamua, June 10, 2009) – The Member of Parliament for Palauli, Toluono Feti tendered his resignation late yesterday from the embattled Tautua Samoa party after the Speakers decision that called for the dissolution of nine parliamentary seats was published in the government newspaper Savali.

Toluono is one of the nine Tautua Party members affected by the Speakers decision announced two weeks ago. Toluono's move is seen as a desperate bid to save his seat. A date for the by elections will be announced any time two weeks from the publications of the Speakers notice.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has yet to consider the Tautua Partys injunction to declare void the Speakers decision. They argue that the Speakers decision infringed on their constitutional rights to freedom of association.

Parliament is scheduled to reconvene for the start of the budget debate next Monday, which will be without the nine MPs of the Tautua Samoa Party.
