KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, June 22, 2009) – Army Sgt. Jasper Obakrairur was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice to fight for freedom.

Major General Donald Goldhorn handed over the medals to Obakrairur’s parents during the military funeral Tuesday.

The purple heart is awarded to soldier wounded or killed in combat.

The Bronze Star Medal is a military decoration that may be awarded for bravery, acts of merit, or meritorious service.

"Today we mourn the loss of a great soldier, he has paid an ultimate sacrifice for freedom," Goldhorn said.

Goldhorn said to him Obakrairur is a "hero."

The Senate and the House of Delegates meanwhile adopted a joint resolution commemorating the life and service of Obakrairur and offer condolences to his family for his untimely passing.

The resolution was given to his parents Demei Obakrairur and mother Florence Kambalang.
