$146,000 set aside to foster industry

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, July 8, 2009) – MORE than 200 seaweed farms will be operational in the Northern Division in two years in an effort to help boost export to Asian countries, says Ministry of Fisheries permanent secretary Viliame Naupoto.

Mr Naupoto, who was on a tour to the division this week, said there was a lot of potential in seaweed farming.

"As part of the tour, I went to Natewa area and other villages in Cakaudrove to inspect seaweed farming and there is a huge potential out there. The demand from Asian countries is high and so we plan to have 200 seaweed farms in the north by early 2012 to meet demands in the market," Mr Naupoto said.

He said a budget of FJ$300,000 [US$146,338] has been given to establish seaweed farming around the country.
