Bainimarama calls Malielegaoi ‘out of his mind’

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Sun, August 5, 2009) – Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has condemned the Samoan Prime Minister's secret move to lobby for the relocation of the Forum Secretariat.

"Samoan PM Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi is out of his mind," Cmdr Bainimarama told the FijiSUN yesterday.

Cmdr Bainimarama said PM Tuilaepa should also stop attacking Fiji because of his military agenda.

"Just because of his personal agenda with the military leaders that he wants to relocate the Secretariat," Cmdr Bainimarama said.

"What does he want from Fiji? What has he done to Fiji? He had never done anything good to the people of Fiji and yet he continues to attack us.

"He is out of his mind and Fiji will not be bothered by his criticisms."

[PIR editor’s note: Samoa’s outspoken prime minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, has been outspoken in his condemnation of the Bainimarama military regime in Fiji – a breach of Pacific tradition to avoid open criticism.]

Cmdr Bainimarama said PM Tuilaepa should listen to the Samoan Head of State instead of putting his agenda across to the Forum.

He said government would not be affected by his attacks as he does not have any idea of what the real situation is like in Fiji

"Fiji will return to democracy in 2014? Are they going to move the Secretariat back here in Fiji?"

Overseas reports stated that PM Tuilaepa moved the motion to relocate the Pacific Forum Secretariat but it was squashed by the Secretariat's media officer Johnson Honimae.

PM Tuilaepa had indicated his desire to seek the endorsement of the Pacific Forum leaders to relocate the Secretariat.

During a recent press conference in Apia, he had made reference of his proposed motion that he was going to call on the Pacific Forum leaders to seriously consider the relocation of the Secretariat.
