Shin Yu Fu No. 68 tried to flee

KOROR (Palau Horizon, August 10, 2009) - The Marine Law Enforcement Office seized more than 100 pieces of sharks and shark fins from a Taiwan vessel last week.

There were about 125 pieces of shark carcasses and shark fins recovered from Shin Yu Fu No. 68.

Lt. Allen Maldangesang, executive officer of PSS HI Remeliik, said they were still doing inventory of the recovered creatures.

He said they don’t have any idea yet how to dispose the sharks and will wait for an order from the Attorney General’s Office.

Maldengasang said they intercepted the vessel on Tuesday, at around 9 a.m. in the western waters of Palau.

The vessel tried to flee but it was intercepted and local authorities managed to get on board and inspected the vessel.

They seized the boat when they found that it possesses shark fins.

There were eight people on board including the ship captain and they are now in custody.

The vessel was brought to the dock of the Marine Law Office while investigation was ongoing.
