Diplomatic relations approach 31 years

APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, August 12, 2009) - The longstanding relationship between Samoa and Egypt was further strengthened yesterday.

This happened when the new Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Samoa, Omar Metwally Mohammed Metwally, presented his Letters of Credence to the Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi.

The credentials ceremony took place yesterday morning at the Head of State’s residence at Tuaefu.

Mr. Metwally also met with Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi.

Ambassador Metwally has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce from Cairo University in Egypt. He has been previously posted to the Embassies of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Kinshasa, London and Tunisia.

He was appointed Deputy Head of Mission in Bonn, Germany from 1994 to 1997 and was later the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Cyprus from 1999 to 2003. Following that, he was posted to Turkey where he served as the Ambassador of Egypt to Turkey from 2004 to 2007.

Metwally is currently the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Australia.

Samoa and Egypt established diplomatic ties on 8 September 1978.

This coming September will mark 31 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Samoa and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
