Two-day outage to allow reservoir maintenance

HAGATNA, Guam (Pacific Daily News, August 30, 2009) – There will be low to no water in southern areas - from the intersection of Route 4 and Route 17, Ipan Talafofo, Malojloj, Inarajan, Merizo and Umatac between Aug. 29 at 6 a.m. and Monday, Aug. 31, according to the Guam Waterworks Authority.

Due to the increase in severe rainy weather over the last several weeks, GWA has found it necessary to shut down the Ugum Water Treatment Plant in Inarajan to clean the 40-foot reservoir.

"GWA submitted (a standard operating procedure), for the shut down to the Guam EPA earlier this week," said Paul Kemp, safety and compliance officer for GWA.

"We plan to close the tank down for 24 hours, drain it through its regular usage to the community, and once the water is emptied out of the tank, we will begin an American Water Works Association (AWWA) tank disinfection procedure." Kemp said. "This means that a chlorine solution would be applied directly to the surfaces of all parts of the facility that would be in contact with the water. "
