Pacific leaders join opening ceremonies

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Sun, September 28, 2009) – Pacific Island leaders gathered at the commissioning of the Fiji Embassy in New York.

Staff at the embassy and Fiji's Ambassadors to the United States, Winston Thompson, and United Nations Berenado Vunibobo were joined by leaders from Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Tonga, Nauru and Kiribati at the function.

Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, while speaking from New York yesterday, said festivities were in full swing and a great feast awaited guests.

"We are all gathered here at the Fiji Embassy. We have the Prime Minister of PNG and Vanuatu and also the President of Kiribati," he said. He revealed that two priests were also in attendance to dedicate the new Fiji Embassy in New York.

"We also have with us officials from relevant embassies that have their country leaders here with us today (in New York)," he said.
