Fiji fourth in Pacific for obesity

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Oct. 15, 2009) – Fiji's health ministry says 60 per cent of the country's population is overweight.

The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reports that Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma announced the figure at the Fiji Food Summit - which is aimed at encouraging healthy living.

Dr Sharma says Fiji is the fourth-ranked nation for obesity in the Pacific.

He said only 16 per cent of the population live beyond 50 years, as non-communicable diseases and cancers take their toll.

Non-communicable diseases are those that are not infectious, possibly stemming from a lifestyle. They may include diabetes and heart disease.

Interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama told the summit luxury living was the cause of the situation.

Health problems were costing the country a lot of money he said.
