Largest amount awarded to the U.S. territory

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Oct. 19, 2009) – The Northern Mariana Islands has received the first installment of the largest, single grant awarded to the US territory.

Education Commissioner Rita Sablan says $US28 million has been released under the State Fiscal Stabilization Funding.

The money is the first phase of $US44 million dollars awarded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The Marianas Variety says the majority of the funding will go to the Public School System, which plans to use the money for repairs to school facilities and classrooms and rehiring teachers that were let go as a result of budget cuts.
