Heavy rains washed away crops, roads in Oro

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Dec. 6, 2009) – Thousands of peopleare in need of urgent relief supplies after heavy rains caused flooding in Papua New Guinea.

Several days of heavy rain last week washed away food gardens, roads and bridges and contaminated water supplies across Oro Province.

Authorities say up to 10,000 people need urgent relief supplies.

Stocks of basic food like rice, flour and tinned fish are also running low in the provincial capital Popondetta.

PNG Power is rationing power while it waits for more fuel to arrive.

The region was badly affected by Cyclone Guba in 2007 and much of the infrastructure that was destroyed then is yet to be repaired.
