Successful bus fare subsidy extended

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Jan. 5, 2010) - A fare subsidy scheme for school students in Fiji has been extended to those travelling by boat, minibus and carriers, the Education Ministry has announced.

Minister Filipe Bole said the scheme, introduced for primary and secondary schools students travelling by bus last year, will also include those using other modes of transport such as carriers, boats and minibus.

Bole said only those students from families whose total household income is FJ$15,000 [US$7,800] or less will qualify for the assistance.

However special consideration will be given to families above the FJ$15,000 [US$7,800] threshold provided they have good reasons.

Bole said the Land Transport Authority is working to ensure that transport providers comply with safety regulations.

Applications will be assessed by the Department of Social Welfare for the consideration of the permanent secretary for Education.

Application forms will be available from schools or post offices from the second week of January 2010.
