Palau Telecoms eyes TV, mobile phone markets

By Bernadette H. Carreon KOROR (Palau Horizon, March 10, 2010) - The Division of Communications has received an application from Palau Telecoms to expand its services to Digital television.

Jonathan Temol, Communications Officer, in an interview said that Palau Telecoms has submitted application for a common carrier license to broadcast television programs.

As part of the application requirement, Temol said a public hearing was conducted last week.

The public hearing was scheduled to get inputs from stakeholders about the proposed expansion of services.

Palau Telecoms is one of the internet service providers in Palau. Palau National Telecommunications Corporation (PNCC) is the other telecommunication services provider ranging from digital TV, GSM and internet services.

The company is also applying for licenses to provide GSM cellular phone roaming services.

Temol said the application is now in review, the next step after the review is to harmonize requested frequencies to the United States.

This, he said might take three months more.

"Then we issue a license to operate after," he said.
