NAMED
Popular physician Yano to take over for Pierantozzi

By Bernadette H. Carreon KOROR (Palau Horizon, March 24, 2010) - Medical practitioner Victor Yano was nominated by President Johnson Toribiong to fill in the Ministry of States post after the president fired State Minister Sandra Pierantozzi, Friday.

The president said that he will be submitting the nomination of Yano before the Senate today and has asked Palau Ambassador to the Philippines Ramon Rechebei to temporarily serve the post.

In a letter to Pierantozzi, March 19, Toribiong said that "it is in the best interest of the Republic during my administration that I have a new Minister of State whose views on foreign affairs is more in line with my vision, a fresh face who has not yet experienced the high levels of frustration that come with your job."

Toribiong gave her until March 22 to leave her post.

Pierantozzi in her response, agreed to vacate her office yesterday.

"I take this opportunity to thank you for having allowed me to serve in this capacity for the last year and thank you likewise for freeing me to pursue my own personal affairs," Pierantozzi said in her response.

The president in his letter to Pierantozzi said that the decision was not personal.

"Over the last few months you have discussed with me several times your dissatisfaction, particularly with the various actions I have taken in relation to your Ministry and with my admittedly difficult style of management. For those I offer sincere apology. I have no doubt that those issues have contributed greatly to the frustration you have experienced," the president said.

The president added that he consulted his political advisors on his decision.

"Madame Minister, please understand that there is nothing personal in my decision. Your intellect and diligence are unquestionable. In my opinion, you are one of Palau’s brightest points of light; a hard working, highly intelligent and talented person whose initiative and skills have contributed greatly to the advancement of our nation," the president said.

Yano’s nomination however will have to be subject of Senate confirmation.

Yano served as Health Minister under former President Tommy Remengesau’s administration.
