Five arrested for smuggling ‘ice’

PAPEÉTE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse, April 21, 2010) - Police officers in Papeete, Tahiti have reportedly arrested over the last days five persons who smuggled drugs from Hawaii.

The drug seized by Police officers is methamphetamine also known as ice.

No indications have been given yet however about how much of the powerful drug were brought to Tahiti.

The five persons arrested are mostly young women. They have been sent to Tahiti's Nuutania jail.

Customs officers also seized 110 grams of ice powder in an aerosol can last December.

The drug, with an estimated street value of 9 million French Pacific francs (US$113,500/75,420 euros), was coming from Hawaii.

About 350 grams of ice were also seized in May 2009. In that case, investigations which went on for several months ended with the arrest of 15 persons.

The drug which was in liquid form was sent by mail from Mexico to Tahiti.
