Voters return same cast of characters

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, April 27, 2010) – The first session of Nauru's newly elected parliament has failed to appoint a Speaker and deputy Speaker.

Voters on Saturday returned the same 18 members to parliament and, with nine on either side, the house failed to appoint a speaker.

President, Marcus Stephen, called the election last month, following unsuccessful motions of no-confidence by opposition members, which he said were disrupting his ability to govern.

The election result was a departure from past trends, in which Nauru has had more than 36 changes of government since independence in 1968.
