TONGA GROUP CALLS FOR RETURN OF ATTORNEY GENERAL Prime Minister urged to apologize to Cauchi

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, May 5, 2010) – The Tonga Public Service Association has written to Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, asking that he apologise to the former Attorney General, John Cauchi, and encourage him to return to his position.

Mr Cauchi resigned last week citing government interference in the judiciary.

The PSA’s spokesperson Mele Amanaki says the interference has to end.

She feels Dr Sevele needs to apologise for misleading comments made by his Minister of Information about Mr Cauchi following the resignation.

Ms Amanaki also says they believe the Government should terminate the appointment of Justice Robert Shuster, who was re-appointed without reference to the Attorney General or the Judicial Services Commission.

She says it should reverse its plans to shut down the Commission and use aid funding from China to cover the costs of two special prosecutors being brought to help with the hearings into the Ashika disaster.
