More than 30 workers suspended, fined

PAPEÉTE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse, May 5, 2010) – In Tahiti, more than 30 former Air Tahiti Nui flight crew staff were sentenced to fines or suspended prison terms by a Papeete Court Tuesday. The criminal charges mostly involved illegal drug use.

"These cases have hurt a lot of people", one of the attorney told reporters.

But these stories are just part of their "private lives", the attorney added.

Almost all of them have been laid off since 2007 because of their drug use.

More than twenty of them were only sentenced to fines of around US$1,600/euros 1,250.

The main person convicted of importing drugs from Los Angeles, USA, to French Polynesia has been sentenced to a one-year suspended prison term.

The trial of the former Air Tahiti Nui flight crew staff first started last March.

During three days, the former flight crew staff and their attorneys gave details about their use of drugs.
