PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S ABAU TO GET TREASURY OFFICE $2 million facility comes to rural district

By Wally Hiambohn PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, May 6, 2010) - Deputy Prime Minister Sir Dr. Puka Temu’s Abau electorate celebrated a ground-breaking ceremony for a PGK6 million [US$2 million] district treasury office at Kupiano.

Deputy Secretary for Finance, Steven Gibson and Central provincial administrator Raphael Yipmaramba also attended.

The two-story building will be built by the Finance Department under it’s District treasuries rollout program which will see the construction of modern treasury offices, staff houses, banking and postal services in all 86 districts in the provinces.

After it was implemented in 2004, the same services have been set up in 52 districts including Morobe, Eastern Highlands, Central, Milne Bay, Chimbu, Madang, West Sepik, Enga and most districts in Southern and Western Highlands provinces.

Mr. Gibson said the Kupiano office was proof of the department meeting its commitment to bring government services to the rural.

"It demonstrates that the department is not just operating from Waigani and making important decisions in isolation of those we are meant to serve, but living up to its mandated responsibilities and bringing services directly to the rural people who deserve it," he said.
