Melekeok governor’s seat up for grabs

By Heide E. Vinoya KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, May 6, 2010) – In Palau, Melekeok State voters will be dropping to the designated polling places today for the Special election to fill the gubernatorial seat after former Gov. Lazarius Kodep resigned from his post.

Palau Election Commission (PEC) Festus Ringang, election officer III said the voting will start 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

There are two polling precincts designated by the PEC, one will be at the Melekeok State Office and other one is here in Koror State at the PEC office in Meyuns hamlet.

Ringang said, after the closing time, all ballots boxes will be taken to PEC office and the counting and canvassing of votes will start.

He said the Melekeok State has an only 578 registered voters; the canvassing of votes will take an hour to be completed

The special election is conducted after Gov. Kodep vacated his post because of irregularities.

Kodep was sentenced to five years in imprisonment and fined of US$10,000 because of his criminal charges.

He was accused of converting public funds to his own use on at least 100 occasions between 2003 and 2007.
