Malaita truck drivers turn to new alternative

By Ednal Palmer HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, May 18, 2010) - The innovative move by Solomon Tropical Product in converting coconut into bio fuel is drawing attention in Auki Malaita.

A truck owner Henry Ledi said many vehicle owners are glad to learn of the breakthrough and are very interested.

"This is because, it is not only clean, but it will help local copra farmers," Mr. Ledi said.

He said as a result, the local scientist who successfully made the breakthrough Francis Kapini will be visiting Auki today.

"All truck owners and the public are waiting anxiously for the visit," he said.

Mr. Kapini will meet with Malaita province premier Richard Irosea and the provincial secretary today.

He will then hold a public meeting tomorrow (Wednesday).

Ledi said it will be an interesting meeting because all truck owners and copra farmers will attend.

"This meeting will surely clear some doubts many people in the province have on bio fuel.

"Although many people have doubts, all of us wholeheartedly support and welcome the breakthrough because the country will vastly benefit."

He said bio fuel had already been used by some trucks in Auki for the past three months.

"One of the fuel depots here ‘Aims Life fuel depot’ has been selling it for the past three months and trucks owners have been using it since then," Ledi said.
