Funds for late Port Moresby bishop

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier) - Governor of National Capital District Powes Parkop donated a check for PGK5000 [US$1,777] to the Catholic Church to assist in the funeral arrangements of the late Auxiliary Bishop of Port Moresby Archdiocese, Cherubim Alfred Dambui.

The Governor presented the check yesterday as a token of appreciation while recognizing the bishop’s services to NCD as a representative of the Council of Churches in the NCD. He was a church representative commissioner on the former board under Michael Malabag in 2003 until 2005 and in 2006 under Sir Mekere Morauta’s chairmanship.

He served both the board and the commission until August 2006.

While on pastoral duties, Bishop Cherubim served in the social and political circles. In 1979 he became the East Sepik Interim Premier and from 1979 to 1983 he was the Premier.

He was serving the diocese of Wewak from 1995 to 2000 and was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of Port Moresby Archdiocese the following year.

The late bishop was from Timbunke in the East Sepik. His funeral service will be conducted today at Don Bosco Technical Institute in Boroko.
