Illegal plant harvested at 15 farms

By Heide E. Vinoya KOROR (Palau Horizon, June 30, 2010) – Two thousand pounds or equivalent to more than 900 kilos of marijuana plants were confiscated by the joint elements of Drug Enforcement and Criminal Investigation Divisions in an operation against illegal drugs in Peleliu Island on Friday.

Narcotic Agent Harline Stark said the marijuana has a street value of US$120,000. The marijuana plants were confiscated from 15 different farms of the State. However no arrest has been made.

Stark said the surprise operation started at 5 a.m. and finished at 6.p.m.

She said that after they received a confidential information regarding the marijuana plantation in Peleliu, eighteen personnel of the two Divisions were immediately dispatched onboard the police patrol boat and raided the area.

Stark said Peleliu State is the biggest marijuana plantation in Palau allegedly distributed to the Koror State and the entire Republic.

The Drug Enforcement Division has yet to identify the owners of those farms.

However, despite the large volume of marijuana plants confiscated, Stark said there are plants still left in Peleliu.

"Not all farms have been raided but we are planning for another operation." Stark said in an interview.

The confiscated marijuana was transported to the Division of Marine Law Enforcement compound and burned.

This is the biggest marijuana operation of the Drug Enforcement Division this year.
