Court expected to grant native title

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, July 29, 2010) – Australia's largest native title sea claim will be 'ratified' in a Federal Court .

Two Torres Strait Islanders, George Mye and Eddie Akiba, lodged the native title sea claim nine years ago - to recognise about 44,000 square kilometres of sea between the tip of Cape York and Papua New Guinea.

Earlier this month a Federal Court judge recognised the rights and interests of Torres Strait Islanders over the entire sea area.

Justice Paul Finn gave the Islanders' legal team two weeks to reach a draft agreement on the wording of the determination.

The Federal Court is expected to formally make the determination in Brisbane today.
