10,008 July total reflects Micronesian Games, summit

By Aurea Gerundio-Dizon KOROR, Palau (Island Times, Aug. 26, 2010) - Monthly statistics released Wednesday by Palau Visitors Authority (PVA) showed the island has received a total of 10,008 visitors in July.

The total arrivals in July almost doubled the total arrivals in the same month of last year. In July 2009, a total of 5,385 tourists came to Palau.

Compared also to the total number of arrivals in June, July arrivals increased by 5,398.

PVA said the significant increase was possibly due to Palau’s hosting of the Micronesia Chief Executives Summit in July and the Micronesian Games, which began August 1.

"Many visitors from Micronesia and Pacific regions traveled to Palau in July to attend the Summit and to see the Micro Games," PVA said.

PVA added that the increase was also due to the coming in of Japan charter flights, China Airlines extra flights, Korean Airlines charter flights and Continental charter flights from Taipei.

Compared to the same month of last year, the total number of travelers from Japan, Taiwan, Korea, North America and Europe increased in July this year.

Taiwanese tourists increased by 2,094 or 166.99 percent compared to the same month last year (only 1,254 in total), Japanese tourists increased by 632 or 37.94 percent (1,666 in July 2009), Korean tourists increased by 640 or 53.96 percent (1,186 in July 2009), North American tourists increased by 67 or 15.09 percent and European tourists increased by 39 or 30.47 percent.

[PIR editor’s note: According to the Palau Visitor’s Authority website, year 2009 had close to a 10,000 drop in visitors compared to the previous year. Year 2009 had a total of 71,887.]

Statistics revealed that as of July, visitor arrivals already totaled 48,421. This reportedly represented an increase of 6,633 or 15.87 percent compared to the previous year on a year-to-date comparison.
