Armed men spirit ‘Jayantha’ away at airport

By Jeremy Inifiri HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Dec. 23, 2010) – FORMER co-workers of the Sri-Lankan national who avoided deportation on Monday confirmed that he used to be an employee of Tajmahal Resturant and believed he is currently residing with friends within the Lungga area.

The man who can only be identified as ‘Jayantha’ was said to be a former Chef of Tajmahal.

He was an employee of the Sri-Lankan/Indian Resturant until he was ordered to leave the country as he didn’t have any residence or work permit.

"Jayantha as he was known to all of us, used to be a Chef at the restaurant from the day it opened until early this year when he was to be deported back to Sri-Lanka.

"The boss actually drove him to the airport on the first occasion and then the boys from this area helped him escape.

"From that day on he didn’t came back to the restaurant and was said to be residing with the boys and even families in this area.

"He couldn’t speak English and only understood a little pidgin," an employee who didn’t want to be named said.

He said that he believed the Sri-Lankan is still residing with the same boys who helped him escape deportation on Monday.

Airport security previously told Solomon Star that a group of armed men entered the Henderson International Airport’s departure lounge, threatening security and police officers before escaping with the foreign national in a bus waiting at the parking area.

Meanwhile Police said that investigations are still continuing, adding that more detailed information will be given at today’s press Conference with Police Commissioner, Mr Peter Marshal.
