Aussies work towards 19,000 scholarships Pacific-wide

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Jan. 6, 2011) - The Australian Government has increased the number of scholarships given to Fiji Students from 20 to 40.

Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said he is pleased with the Australian Government’s decision to upscale its scholarship award to Fiji.

"… Because this will help Fiji overcome some of our impediments to higher education and improve education and training opportunities for our people," he said.

Twenty-seven Fijian recipients of Australian Regional Development Scholarships graduated with qualifications in health, agriculture, engineering, environment, business and governance in 2009.

In 2010 a further 10 Fijian recipients of Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) attained qualifications in health, governance, engineering and agriculture.

A recent report issued by the Australian Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee observed the Australian scholarships program was set to double in size over five years to 19,000 scholarships for the Asia–Pacific region.

"I am hopeful Fiji will again be able to benefit from this increased largesse," Ratu Inoke added.
