CEO claims Retail Association ‘misinformed’

By Repeka Nasiko SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Jan. 6, 2011) – In Fiji, Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) Chief Executive Officer, Rohan Mail says recent comments made by Fiji Retailers Association President Himmat Lodhia about their increased local call charges were "at best misinformed".

"In response and contrary to Mr. Lodhia’s statements, TFL has been in the forefront of reducing call charges to customers even before liberalisation." Mail told FijiLive in an email response. As a former Director of both TFL and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings, Mr. Lodhia would know that international call charges heavily subsidize local call rates. International call charges, which averaged over FJ$1.50 [US 80 cents] per minute in 2005 (during his tenure), have been significantly reduced by Telecom Fiji, currently costing only FJ 16 cents [US 9 cents] per minute for frequently called destinations, a reduction of around 90 percent." he said

Mail further stated that the company has informed its customers on the recent changes through their monthly bills and will continue to keep them informed on TFL’s products.

"I personally would welcome Mr. Lodhia providing examples of areas where he believes prices could have been further reduced," he added.
