‘We view Samoa as our true friend’

By Charlina Tone APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, March. 12, 2011) – In Samoa, the Ambassador of China, Zhao Weiping presented his credentials to the Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi yesterday.

He replaces former ambassador, Ma Chongren who returned to China last month after the completion of his term.

Mr. Weiping looks forward to strengthening the relationship between China and Samoa.

"The Chinese government attaches great importance to its relations with Samoa, he says. We view Samoa as our true friend and important partner in the South Pacific and are committed to the development of friendly relations and cooperation with Samoa on the basis of five principles of peaceful coexistence."

Diplomatic relations between Samoa and China began in 1975. Since then, the two countries have supported other economically and maintained close communication in regional and international affairs.

"Our exchanges at various levels are frequent and practical cooperation in many areas such as the economy, culture, education and health are deepening."

His Highness Tui Atua welcomed the new Ambassador. He says Samoa has benefitted tremendously from China’s assistance since 1975.

"This is characterized by mutual trust and openness, His Highness says of the relationship. Samoa continues to benefit from the immense contributions China has made towards the development of key sectors of Samoa’s economy including education, health, sports and infrastructure."

His Highness Tui Atua vowed to continue to support China whenever and wherever possible.
