Residents of Solomons capital asked to boil water

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, April 8, 2011) – Health authorities in Solomon Islands are warning residents in the capital Honiara to boil drinking water.

The national broadcaster SIBC says a new report has revealed the city water supply was contaminated with human waste.

The report was released by the City Council's Health Division, and says 20 out of 22 water samples taken from water sources across Honiara contained bacteria.

It came from a field survey to investigate if drinking water supplied to the city was safe.

The Honiara City Council has advised the capital to boil drinking water and store it safely.
