EARTHQUAKE STRIKES FIJI’S LAU GROUP No expected damages, tsunami

By Repeka Nasiko SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, April 11, 2011) - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck off the Coast of Doi Island in the Lau group early [yesterday] morning.

According to the Mineral Resources Department, the earthquake struck 270 kilometers south south west of Doi Island at about 4.18am local time.

The Department said since the center of the earthquake was located too deep in the earth’s inner mantle, no expected damages or even a tsunami would have been triggered by the deep medium sized event.

This is another of a series of strong earthquakes that have struck our shores since the beginning of this year.

The last earthquake measured at 6.4 struck off the coast of Labasa last week. In March a total of three earthquakes hit parts of Fiji in 2 days.
