REVERED MATA‘AFA TITLE BESTOWED IN SAMOA ‘This must be God’s will’

By Jasmine Netzler-Iose APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, May 30, 2011) –Tupuola Vui Iosefo Tupuola, 81, was bestowed one of Samoa’s most respected matai titles, Mata’afa, during a traditional ceremony at Amaile, Aleipata.

After the ceremony a delighted Mata’afa Tupuola says: "This must be God’s will and gift for me. It’s a reward for my many years of honest service."

He was blessed by Catholic priests Petelo Tialavea and Feleti.

Mata’afa also reveals his is the first Mata’afa titled to be bestowed in almost 14 years.

The last holder of the title was Mata’afa Fa’asuamaleaui Pu’ela who passed away in 1997. Mata’afa Tupuola believes his being chosen for this title is "a blessing from God for all my years of service to my family and our village."

He goes on to say: "I am thankful to God for such a grand blessing in my life considering I am only a humble but simple servant."

He says he is prepared to continue his service to his family and his village. Mata’afa is married to Masiofo Amelia. They have 12 grown children.
