Vessel would ply country’s outlying islands

By Nasik Swami SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, June 9, 2011) - Major plans are in place by the Ministry of Health to build Fiji’s first floating hospital.

Speaking to FijiLive ministry spokesman Peni Namotu said it’s a long term plan for the ministry to build a floating hospital which will serve the maritime islands of Fiji.

He said currently the maritime places are not accessible to services provided at the main referral hospitals.

"This floating hospital is going to address the issue of quality services provided to people living in those areas," Namotu said.

He said the floating hospital will be a ship that will have all medical facilities similar to that provided at hospitals around the country.

Namotu however was tight-lipped on revealing the cost of the floating hospital and its operational dates.

Finer details of the floating hospital will be released later.
