Government deepens, expands Avatiu Harbor

By Rosie Manins RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (Cook Islands News, July 11, 2011) - Reef Shipping has bought a larger cargo vessel in conjunction with Cook Islands Trading Corporation (CITC) executive chairman Trevor Clarke.

Prime Minister Henry Puna announced the news in parliament on Friday.

Puna said he was told about the purchase on Thursday evening.

Because we the Cook Islands are doing our part to deepen and extend Avatiu harbour they are committed to buying a much larger vessel to satisfy the trade. This purchase is being made in conjunction with our own Trevor Clarke, Puna told fellow ministers and members of parliament.

Reef Group director Phillip McNicholl, who is in Rarotonga at present with a delegation of New Zealand Chinese Business Roundtable Council members, confirmed the vessel purchase.

McNicholl says the cargo ship is in Auckland at present.

Further details are expected to be disclosed in the next week.
