MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Aug. 2, 2011) – The commanding officer of a Royal New Zealand Navy vessel has reportedly been suspended after allegations of inappropriate behaviour in Vanuatu.

The New Zealand Herald reports Commander John William Butcher, in charge of HMNZS Te Mana, has been stood down while the defence force investigates an incident when the ship was docked in Port Vila.

It is alleged Commander Butcher was drunk at an official function in the capital last week.

Defence force spokesman Chris Wright has refused to confirm the story.

But he told the newspaper it is unclear whether whether charges will be laid under the Armed Forces Discipline Act.
