Activist questions cost of sending delegation ‘as tourists’

By Daniel Namosuaia

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Sept. 20,2011) – General Secretary of the Malaiata Ma’asina Forum (MMF) William Gua says Solomon Islands Prime Minister Danny Philip and his delegation’s overseas trip to the General Assembly meeting in New York today is very unnecessary.

Gua in his statement questioned why the prime minister has to go when we (Solomon Islands) already have an ambassador who can represent us in that meeting. He said it is a waste of tax payers’ money for him and his of delegation to go as tourists to the UN top meeting.

The General Assembly is the highest meeting organized by UN where all heads of the countries come together to discuss issues of concern affecting the globe.

[PIR editor's note: Gua and the Malaita Ma'asina Forum have called for the removal of two ministers, Gordon Lilo and Snyder Rini, along with two advisors in the police force. The protest presented the prime minister with an ultimatum: remove the officials or step down.]
