Solomons allegedly unwilling to prosecute suspect

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Sept. 29, 2011) – The secretary-general of the Oceania National Olympic Committee, Ric Blas, has accused the Solomon Islands Olympic Committee of failing to take action against those at the centre of allegations of fraud and the mismanagement of funds.

Mr Blas told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat in one case a successful application for thousands of dollars in funding for archery training was based on a fraudulent claim.

He says ONOC has repeatedly called on Solomon Islands authorities to act.

"It appears that they didn't want to go after people responsible. Now, they identified individuals that were involved, and yet they still continued to walk around, no charges were being lodged against them, so we decided to try and force the issue."

News media in Solomon Islands says the concerns raised by ONOC have not disrupted athlete preparation for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
