Malaita man alleges Lilo gave him $12,500 to stop planned protest

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Oct. 21, 2011) – A Malaitan has called on Malaita Ma’asina Forum (MMF) general secretary, William Gua to return the alleged bribe money back to Minister for Finance, Gordon Darcy Lilo.

The call came after Mr Gua continued to hold to the money which he claim was used to bribe him.

Mr Gua allegedly claimed Lilo gave him $12,500 in four different occasions with the intention for MMF to cancel the protest march against Prime Minister Danny Philip.

MMF claimed the Philip’s Government is serving the interests of his cronies rather than national interests.

And MMF wants to protest that in a peaceful march soon.

But Jonathan Waikau said Mr Gua needs to return the money back to Lilo to show that he is a true leader who had advocate for transparency with MMF.

"If Gua fails to return back the money, then it shows that he is pursuing his personal interest with MMF," he said.

"But if Mr Gua returns back the money, this will show that he is truly somebody who is fighting against corruption in the country."

Mr Waikau also called on Mr Gua to advocate for the displacement issues of Malaitans affected after the ethnic tension on Guadalcanal.

He said this was the core issues MMF should pursue rather than poking their nose on national issues which diverts from its original mandate.

Attempts to talk to Mr Gua yesterday were unsuccessful as his mobile was offline.

Earlier Mr Gua said he will hold on the money to show to the police as part of an evidence for investigation.
